Full Day Tour

Why not let Elma pick you up from your accommodation or ship, and share with you the fascinating history of Shetland, enlivened and enriched by the many myths, customs and folklore of the Shetlanders. At the end of your tour why not spend the evening with "Island Trails" owners Laurie and Elma and their fiddle playing neighbours, Mark, Alison and Claire. Enjoy a traditional Shetland Supper of soup, bannocks and silver award winning heather and seaweed fed lamb.

Tingwall Trail

Relive with Elma the dramatic history of the Tingwall Valley, from the time of the Vikings to the tragic story of the Rev. John Turnbull. Visit the 18th Century Tingwall Kirk, built on the site of a chapel from the early Norse Christian era, and Law Ting Holm where the Norsemen held their Parliament. A visit to the Walster Weavers concludes your tour.

Ancient Capital Trail

Visit Scalloway our ancient capital taking in Scalloway Castle, Shetland Woolen Company, Scalloway Museum and the Prince Olaf Slipway. We will lunch at "Da Haaf" Restaurant, famous for its fish dishes before moving on to the islands of Trondra and Burra and a visit to the Beth Abba Studio.

Shetland Bus Trail

During World War II, the 'Shetland Bus' was a vital sea link to the Allies for Resistance fighters in occupied Norway. In the face of the furious North Sea and relentless German patrols, Norwegian fishing boats brought refugees to freedom, returning with ammunition and trained fighters. See the 17th Century Lunna House, where wartime operations were centred, and visit Lunna Kirk, built in 1753, the oldest church in the Islands still in use.

"Da Hams O' Roe"

This full day trail consists of an exhilarating drive through an amazing rocky landscape, leading to a remote, unspoilt hideaway. The memorable expedition is enhanced by the fine food served in the homely atmosphere of the Valleyfield Guest House.

Archaeology Trail

This trail gives you a comprehensive insight into Shetland's ancient past. You will visit the Iron Age Broch on Mousa, explore the Viking settlement at Old Scatness - presently being excavated and view the Neolithic Quarry at Catpund. Your journey of discovery culminates at Jarlshof, inhabited from the time of the first island settlers right up until the 17th Century.
